What TimeIs It?

A clock has two hands. Today the long hand sits on the 12, and the short hand tells us the hour. When you know the hour, you can say the time: o'clock!

Tock the Owl says

“Hoo-hoo! Point to a number on my clock and watch the short hand go there. Then push and drag it too. Go on — try it!”

Grown-up corner

No screens needed — five minutes of this is worth fifty clicks.

  • Call out a time: “Nine o'clock!” Your child points the short hand at 9 on a real clock and says the time back.
  • Swap: they call out a time, you point. Get one wrong on purpose and see if they catch you. Kids love correcting grown-ups.
  • Ask only about the hour hand at first. The long hand stays on the 12 for this lesson.
  • Paper plate, split pin (or a blu-tack lump), two cardboard hands. Write 12, 3, 6, 9 first, then fill in the rest together.
  • Colour the short hand red and the long hand blue so the words stick.
  • Keep it on the fridge and ask for the time once a day this week.
  • “The big hand is on the 12 — it's o'clock! What hour?”
  • Bedtime, cartoons, dinner: name the hour, never the minutes, until o'clock is automatic.
  • Next lesson: half past. Don't jump ahead — a solid hour sense is what makes halves easy.
