Warm‑up rhyme

Five little critters…

Hold up one hand. Tap Count down and fold one finger for every line.

“Five little critters sitting in a tree,”

the first one said, ‘Come count with me!’”

The second said, ‘Oh boy, oh boy!’”

The third said, ‘Let's make some noise!’”

The fourth said, ‘And then, and then…’”

The fifth said, ‘We're counting again!’”

The big idea

Five towers. Five numbers. Tap!

Each tower is taller because its number is bigger. Tap a tower to let the critters out — then count them out loud.

Point · follow · say it loud

Trace the numbers

Watch the glowing finger draw. Then draw the number in the air with your own finger — big and wobbly is fine!

one
  • 1Start at the green dot at the top and go down, down, down.
  • 2Say the number while you draw it. Ears help fingers remember.
  • 3Then trace it in salt, in dirt, on a window — anywhere you like.
  • 4Watch four and five closely: they need two strokes. Pip lifts the pencil!

05
Counting game

How many critters?

Count them one by one, then tap the number. If you're not sure, tap a wrong number and Pip will count them out with you.

Can you point to the leaf with 1 on it?

My star jar

Five stars for five numbers

Every finished bit of the lesson drops a star in the jar. Fill it up — Pip has something for you.

    🏅

    Number Hero!

    You counted 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 all by yourself. High‑five, Pip!

    09
    For grown‑ups

Take the numbers off the screen

Three two‑minute things to try after the lesson. No worksheets, no pencils.

    Count real things

Stairs, spoons, toes, red cars. Hold up your hand and ask: “Can you show me four?” Then swap and let them ask you.
    • Count backwards from 5 too — it's harder!

    Which hand has more?

Put 3 buttons on one side, 5 on the other. Cover one side for a second. “How many were there?” Seeing a small amount without counting is called subitising — the towers practise it.

    Welcome the mistakes

Pip gets it wrong too. If the count slips, don't say “no” — just count slowly together and point at each thing once. Then try again 10 seconds later.

    Ten Tiny Toes

We stretch our counting from 5 all the way to 10, build a ten‑frame out of buttons, and find out what happens when a number gets bigger than one hand.
