hello, mathematician!
MakingTEN
Ten is a magic number. It is the number you can make in so many ways. Let's find them!
…go on, tap it.
Trace the big 10 with your finger. Up… around… down… around!
Fill the ten-frame
Look! A ten-frame has 10 boxes. Tap a box to put a counter in it. Tap a counter to take it out.
Your goals — fill the frame to match each one:
Pick a goal. Count out loud as you tap: one, two, three…
Number bonds of 10
Ten can split into two parts. Slide the bar and watch the parts change. They always make 10!
🕵️ Mystery bond
I hid one part! There are 6 dots. Ten in total. How many are hiding?
Get 3 right to earn the Bond Maker sticker.
Bug hunt & tally
There are 10 bugs hiding in the garden. Tap each bug you find. Count out loud as you go!
Story hops
Three little number stories. Read it, tap Hop! and watch the frog move along the line.
Match to 10
Tap two cards. If they add up to 10, they stick together! Can you clear the whole board?
Pairs so far: 0 of 6
Show what you know
Five little questions. Take your time. Wrong answers are how your brain grows!

We will use everything you learned today and add one whole ten and some ones. You are ready!
ten everywhere you look
Where 10 hides today
Grown-up corner
Goal today: fluency with compositions of 10 (subitising, bonds, and the "how many more to make 10?" strategy that later powers addition to 20 and beyond).
How to run this lesson (15–20 min)
- Do it together, out loud. Counting aloud anchors the cardinality idea — the last number said is the total.
- Part 1 → 2 is the core. If time runs short, do the ten-frame and mystery bonds and skip the rest.
- Ask, don't tell: "How did you know that was 7 without counting?" Push toward see-a-group rather than count-one-by-one.
- Let them be wrong. The quiz allows retries — that is deliberate.
Watch for
- Counting from 1 every time → play "flash": show 5 dots for 3 seconds, hide, ask how many. Build subitising.
- Can't find "how many more" → use two hands: 7 fingers up, ask how many fingers are down. Ten is the whole.
- Confuses the bond slider direction → fine; go back to the physical ten-frame with buttons or coins.
- Finishes fast → challenge: "Can you make 10 in six different ways? Write the number sentences."
Offline practice this week
- Set the table: "We need 10 spoons. There are 6. How many more?"
- Stairs: count up to 10, then down from 10. Feel the whole and the parts.
- Ten frames made of tape on the floor — jump the counters in.
- Snack maths: 10 grapes in two cups. Close your eyes, one cup is hidden — guess the split.
Language to keep using: whole, part, how many more, equals, altogether, hiding.
Print-free companion: a blank ten-frame and 10 buttons/coins work for every activity above.
