Set up the real facts

The real-life checklist

• Practice out loud. Rehearse the three steps at home, then again in the shop for real — "Say it, don't just tell it."
• Stay put beats search. A child who stays still is found in about a minute. A child who walks towards the exit walks away from you.
• Uniforms, not strangers. Look for a name tag, a hi-vis vest or a till. Never another child, never someone who offers a ride or sweets.
• Never go outside. The rule is: stay inside the shop, never into the car park.
• Know your own facts. First name + surname of a parent, and one phone number. Numbers set to a rhythm stick ("five-five-five… twenty-one").
• Prevention trick: take a photo of what your child is wearing that morning.

This game is a rehearsal, not a substitute for staying close to your child.
